Trauma, Shame, and the Nervous System - Online Workshop - 13 CE Credits

    Friday, April 5, 12, 19, 26, 2024

    10:00 AM - 6:00 PM PT

SHAME AND TRAUMA ARE BOTH STATES OF FREEZE. SHAME, LIKE TRAUMA, PUTS THE BODY IN A FREEZE STATE AND LOWERS THE ABILITY TO THINK AND ACT CLEARLY. SHAME ALMOST ALWAYS ACCOMPANIES TRAUMA—AND BEING SHAMED CAN HAVE A TRAUMATIC EFFECT.

In working with trauma, there is a tendency to miss the shame component that is often hiding in plain sight. And shame can be worked with most successfully as a form of trauma, utilizing many somatic techniques. Shame is also a primary emotion. And it has a strong cognitive component—the belief that “something is wrong with me”—that needs to be addressed.

Being able to understand and have compassion for the parts of the person that are still frozen in shame and trauma helps us be able to sit with a client without having our own shame triggered. In this intermediate workshop, we will explore the connection between shame and trauma and look at ways to unlock somatic and imaginal resources to work with both effectively.

Applied Polyvagal Theory in Yoga: Therapeutic Practices for Emotional Health

    Course Description

This class focuses on the intersection of polyvagal theory and yoga to help your body and mind cope with the demands of stress and recover from trauma. You can compassionately support your growth by enhancing the health of the autonomic nervous system. Therapeutic yoga allows you to attend to the interrelationships between mind, emotions, physiology, and behavior while inviting you recognize the inherent wholeness that resides within your spirit.

Applied polyvagal theory in yoga provides conscious breathing, vagal toning, mindful movement, and meditation practices that help rewire the nervous system. We help clients, students, and ourselves cultivate a felt sense of ease during times of safety, enhance our capacity to handle challenges with equanimity, and reclaim our ability to recover from stress swiftly and efficiently.

    Takeaway + Special Discount

Through the lens of polyvagal theory, you will learn how the vagus nerve is a bi-directional information highway between mind and body—more importantly, we will experientially practice together yogic breath, movement, and awareness practices that can easily be integrated within psychotherapy.

    About the speaker's new book:

“This well-researched book not only cites the most current applicable studies related to brain science and yoga as they impact mental health, but also provides a steady and thorough summary of yoga’s ancient wisdom as it applies to Polyvagal Theory and psychotherapy…Applied Polyvagal Theory in Yoga has become a valued and validating reference as I offer LifeForce Yoga practices to the yoga and mental health professionals I serve. No matter the healing modality in which you work, I fully endorse the many gifts this book has to offer you and your clients.”— Amy Weintraub, founder of LifeForce Yoga, and author of Yoga Skills for Therapists, Yoga for Depression, and the Yoga for Your Mood Deck (from Amy’s foreword to the book)

Her brilliance lies in her capacity to curate a path of consilience across three major disciplines: science, soma, and soul. Each chapter offers polyvagal-informed yoga practices that enable readers to bring her model to life.”

USABP ON THE MOVE is an opportunity for our community to connect and experience restorative practices while getting exposure to many forms of somatic movement and mindful body-awareness programs.

The root of e-motion is “to move.” The same regions of the brain responsible for movement also carry out our cognitive processes. Our brain evolved from movement and still depends on it day to day. Join us to discover how conscious movement can bring nourishing restoration, playful community connection, and the understanding of how moving helps our thoughts, words, and actions.

Somatic tools may include, among others, breath, movement, self-directed touch, sound vibration, and conscious dialogue.

This event is oriented toward beginners as well as experienced Focusers who would enjoy a chance to begin freshly. The Academy is also a great opportunity for new Focusing teachers or those returning to teaching looking for a fresh perspective.

Coming from the work of Eugene Gendlin, Focusing is an experiential, embodied and evidence-based practice of self-reflection. During Focusing, your attention will open up to multiple layers and aspects of living. It’s called Focusing because it requires a special kind of “focus” to notice what is not yet clear, fuzzy and vague, implicit in how you interact with your situations and environment. This fuzzy dimension of experience is called the “felt sense.” Focusing on the “felt sense” allows an in-depth clarification process to happen.

This event will be recorded and available for members and non-members who register for this event. This course will not include CEs.

      Description:

This is not a top-down lecture; it is an invitation to come together and gently unpack and explore ingrained perspectives that cause harm, others, and leave many behind; that thrive on exploitation and that forces specific ways of being while denying the deeper truths of ourselves.

Topics to consider in advance of the event and for attendee discussion:

A conversation cannot be predicted. Attendees are invited to come having reflected on the following prompts and with a willingness to share:

      • What is your cultural heritage, to what degree do you identify with it, and what conflicts do you carry around it?

      • What role did people of your heritage play in imperialism, colonization, domination or oppression?

      • What role did/does the government of the country in which you live play in imperialism? Colonization?

      • What was happening in the world (not just your surroundings) from your prenatal time through age 6? How did these events affect your country, state, neighborhood, community, family/ parents?

      • How does this contribute to your perspective of and interaction with social (political) hierarchies?

      Learning Objectives:

To stimulate curiosity and care while moving towards:

      • getting to know ourselves better in the context of unpacking whiteness, how and where it shows up, and it’s impact.

      • Inviting steps towards equity, inclusivity, and diversity which expands beyond man-made systems and into consideration of all of creation.

      General Agenda
      • Welcome
      • USABP Announcements
      • Facilitated exploration together
      • Q & A
      • Overtime discussion (after the event formally concludes)

      About the Spotlight Organization

Seattle School of Body-Psychotherapy offers a three-year training program which can be taken for both personal transformation and professional development. The program at SSBP incorporates the work of Wilhelm Reich and Core Energetics with contemporary therapies and Earth-based practices. With the understanding that pure life force emanates from the Core of every being and always remains intact, we study how to track the blocks that obscure it over time and through the life cycle. We learn techniques to free the expansive life energy in order to use it on behalf of our deeper life path and to reconnect with our joy. The result is as spiritual as it is psychological, opening our perception and that of those with whom we work, to the greater world around us as well as to our own unique offering. Read more

In this training, students learn to develop an exquisite sensitivity and attunement to others, and to convey this understanding. This empathy and responsiveness helps to create a deep sense of safety and connection, and facilitates the effectiveness of the therapy. The self-development of the therapist coupled with Hakomi’s highly innovative techniques, form the core of the training.

Using non-dualistic principles of mindfulness and gentle, open curiosity, the Hakomi therapist creates an atmosphere of safety for deep and sophisticated processing. This helps the client yield their defences safely and willingly to be examined, re-evaluated and transformed into more functional choices and behaviors.

The relief, increased self-awareness and freedom provides the client with a sense of personal empowerment, choice, and a richer appreciation for life.

How can you get what you need, even when the listener seems unwilling or incapable of giving it?

Even with those trained in Focusing, it can happen that during your Focusing session, your partner doesn’t listen well, or doesn’t listen in the way that supports you. Even more so in life, many people out there in the world haven’t learned to truly listen. We have all probably been guilty of this ourselves, but this workshop is not about how to listen to others. It's about receiving what we need when circumstances aren't ideal.

Through demonstrations of good listening and listening that isn't helpful, as well as through experiential exercises, Evelyn and Catherine will share strategies for overcoming the obstacle of not being listened to.

      May 9, 2024

How can you get what you need, even when the listener seems unwilling or incapable of giving it?

Learning to ask for what you need is an important skill, but it doesn’t always work because sometimes the listener doesn’t do what you’ve asked them to do, for whatever reason. The most liberating skill is to be able to listen to yourself even when the listener is not creating a conducive environment. Even with those trained in Focusing, it can happen that during your Focusing session, your partner doesn’t listen well, or doesn’t listen in a way that supports you. Even more so in life, many people out there in the world haven’t learned to truly listen. We have all probably been guilty of this ourselves, but this workshop is not about how to listen to others. It's about receiving what we need when circumstances aren't ideal.

In this Highlight, Evelyn and Catherine will discuss the phenomenon of not being listened to, which they have experienced many times themselves. Through demonstrations of good listening and listening that isn't helpful, as well as through experiential exercises, they will share strategies for overcoming the obstacle of not being listened to.

In this Highlight, Evelyn and Catherine hope you will gain greater capacity to tap into your felt sense, even while not being well listened to by another person. Strengthening this skill can help your Focusing sessions be more consistently fulfilling. Better yet, it can help bring more felt sensing into your daily life.

Some familiarity with Focusing is helpful, but no prior experience is required. All are welcome to attend and participate.

Dr. Evelyn Fendler-Lee is a self-employed organizational psychologist and person-centered counselor. She is a certified Focusing-Trainer and a coordinator-in-training offering the training & certification program “Deep Thinking to Move Life and Thoughts Forward.”

Catherine Torpey is the Executive Director of The International Focusing Institute. She first learned Focusing in 1996, in the Bio-Spiritual style, which emphasizes the aspect of grace in Focusing and which encourages the listener to fully honor the words used by the Focuser. Her idea of how to be a companion (listener) in a Focusing session when she was at the first Focusing Institute Summer School in 2006 and saw Gene Gendlin companion others in his own style. She later learned Domain Focusing and was certified by TIFI.

Focusing Roundtable: Felt-Sensing And Spacious Listening In Everyday Life

Noticing, Nurturing And Normalizing Felt-Sensed, Authentic Relationships Within Our Everyday Lives

This Roundtable will invite an interactive exploration of how we might live in a Focusing way within the “real world” of everyday life, especially in those circumstances where Focusing is not already an explicitly shared cultural value and/or practice. In particular, our discussion will center around two integral components of Focusing practice: felt-sensing and spacious listening.

Mary Elaine and Christina will briefly share instances from their own lived experiences and offer a few brief exercises to illustrate the power of pausing to invite freshness in conversations with others, create space for instances of “natural” felt-sensing to emerge and invite new possibilities that may arise from spacious listening.

      Description

In the worlds of exploring the human experience of trauma, the word “Issue” has taken a permanent, dubious place in the vernacular. Therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, body workers, doctors, and lawyers arrange their practices based on the idea of identifying the trauma as an issue and then helping to resolve that issue. This has been the protocol for the treatment of trauma for many years now. Treatment, at some point, involves the practitioner saying to a client “You have an issue with…” , or, the client saying “I have an issue with…” An “issue” by definition is a concern, a problem, a matter that is in dispute between two or more parties. To treat the issue is to focus on the problem, the dispute, the “What’s Wrong”.

For a traumatized body—-a traumatized client, that approach and focus frustrates it’s natural ability to share an injury. An injury, by definition is a harm suffered by a person due to some act or omission done by another person. An injury to a client consists of many facets of pain, which always presents in the sequence of the harming. Sometimes the body is harmed first, the mind second, the emotions third, the soul fourth. Other times these positions are shifted—the feelings get hurt first, then the body ETC.. Each client presents their own unique sequence. Traumatized bodies are always presenting injuries, not issues. When we treat a client as suffering from an injury, we are clearly making the client’s body essential to devising a treatment protocol.

When we treat the client as having an injury rather than having an issue, we help the client to know the sequence and syntax of what was done to, or omitted from, their bodies and their lives. When we mis-identify a client’s injury as an issue, we focus ours, and our clients’attention on the consequences—the chaos that crackles in the mind .When we call an injury an issue, we rob it of it’s integrity, it’s integral nature. Once this happens, the client will be lost in the “MIND” field always trying to solve a problem rather than putting salve on the wound.

Join us as we explore, and, recognize how identifying and treating your clients’ injuries restores movement and integrity to a client’s body. Experience how restoring integrity and movement to a client’s body animates, rejuvenates, and resources the wisdom of the client. Learn how this” paradigm shift “from “Issue” to “Injury” changes the landscape of healing trauma.

This workshop will use didactic and experiential exercises with attendees (and volunteers) to elucidate the body’s ability to discern holding on from being held onto

Our pulsation, our flow of energy ~ emotions, spontaneous behavior, clear thinking ~ can all be disrupted by the events or circumstances in our lives, resulting in patterns of contracting our bodies that prevent us from connecting with others, from being realistic, and from achieving what we would like to in the world. Our goal is embodiment.

We will explore pulsation both in terms of our breath in-stroke and out-stroke, and in our ability to be fully embodied, in contact with and accepting of our internal experience (in-stroke) a well as well-oriented in reality, able to move out into the world, connect well with people, achieve our goals and carry our dreams to fruition (out-stroke).

This workshop is for people who work in a helping capacity with others to learn basic techniques to facilitate grounding and presence, and restore our energetic flow.

      Learning objectives:

      • Understand Contact and 'Contactlessness' both interpersonally and within the self

      • Experience various aspects of grounding from a developmental perspective

      • Promote grounding in the body to facilitate awareness and effectiveness

      • Learn how to reduce anxiety with grounding techniques

      • Describe how particular patterns of breathing, muscle tension and movement can influence a client's mood, emotional experience, expression and energetic regulation.

      • Learn to use touch and movement to change established patterns of inhibiting one's experience

      Who can benefit?

      - Mental health practitioners interested in developing or refining a body-centered approach to their practice

In this course students are introduced to a language of human life that includes growth, aging and dying as we do a somatically-oriented overview of human development. Students learn to see spiritual, energetic and physical experience as deeply connected through the human life span and beyond. On its own, this course helps people reorient their ideas of life and death and know themselves as part of nature, not opposed to it. This radically reduces existential anxiety.

The Nature of Being Human is taught in small classes and, like all SoULL material, is didactic, interactive and highly experiential. This material is powerful and completely accessible for people who are not therapists. Do not think that this course is only for professionals. Never fear. It is for any curious, open-minded adult.

Bioenergetic Therapy and Polyvagal Theory: Expanding Human Connectivity Conference sponsored by the Massachusetts Society for Bioenergetic Analysis.

The conference addresses the connection between polyvagal theory and bioenergetic therapy. This theme provides opportunities to learn more about how to regulate your nervous system and how to manage trauma and times of stress. Much of the new scientific research about polyvagal theory supports what bioenergetic therapy has been teaching for nearly 100 years.

Bioenergetic analysis focuses on the notion that while we are born with a tremendous amount of vitality and energy, early life experiences cause chronic bodily tension which can lead to a decrease in breathing, energy, joy, and connection to oneself and others. In this state of chronic tension and constriction, symptoms of anxiety and depression can flourish and inhibit our vitality. Bioenergetic therapy provides tools to work with the body in a profoundly freeing way. By reducing physical and emotional blocks with breathing, grounding, and emotional expressive exercises we begin to experience an increased sense of vitality, growing ease, a greater sense of well-being, and an increased ability to sustain and enjoy relationships and connections with others. Attendees at this conference will have the opportunity to attend keynote talks, experiential workshops, and participate in small process groups, which will provide opportunities to explore these themes in a safe space, all while enjoying nourishing food, community, fun evening activities, and indoor/outdoor amenities at the beautiful Essex Woods Meeting and Retreat Center.

Unlocking Shame Binds: Unbinding Shame from Trauma, Grief, Anger, Fear, Joy, Pleasure - Online Workshop - 13 CE Credits

EMOTIONS ARE DESIGNED TO RUN THROUGH OUR BODIES AND COMPLETE IN AN ACTION.

Every emotion has an action tendency. The action tendency of shame is to hide, vanish, disappear. Shame is designed to keep us safe by binding with the other primary emotions, lower their intensity, and keep them from completing in an action, such as grieving, reaching out, or setting a boundary. When shame binds with anger, fear, joy, curiosity, or grief, those emotions cannot finish. We get caught in a maze of feelings, with no end. When someone simply can’t get angry, or can’t finish grieving a loss, or can’t feel joyful, or can’t move forward in life, we know that shame is involved, binding with the other primary emotions in a toxic, endless stew of feelings.

In this workshop, we will learn how to help clients untangle shame from the other primary emotions so that they can complete. A client can mourn a loss and move on, or express anger in an appropriate way, study for an exam, complete a project, or simply enjoy life. We will learn to explain the shame-fear bind, the shame-grief bind, the shame-anger bind, the shame-joy bind, and the way shame binds with curiosity to keep us stuck. And we will learn techniques to untangle the binds so the client can live their life in a fuller, more productive, and more joyful way.

        Description

This presentation highlights the results from a five-year NIH-funded randomized controlled trial of Mindful Awareness in Body-oriented Therapy (MABT) as an adjunct to medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD). MABT is designed to sequentially teach interoceptive awareness skills to promote self-awareness, care and regulation; this mind-body program involves psycho-education, touch, and mindfulness. The quantitative results showed significant increases in interoceptive awareness, and significant reductions in post-traumatic stress symptom reductions and pain severity for those that received MABT vs. Control pre-post intervention. Qualitative results highlight improved emotional awareness, emotion regulation and self-agency. Join us in hearing more about this project and the experiences of people who received this approach as part of their treatment.

Her other professional roles include: Research Director of the UW Osher Center for Integrative Medicine, and Director of the Center for Mindful Body Awareness. Cynthia studies a mind-body therapy she developed called Mindful Awareness in Body-oriented Therapy (MABT). The MABT approach includes psychoeducation, mindfulness and touch to teach interoceptive awareness skills for self-care and emotion regulation. Her clinical and research expertise is primarily focused on community-based research to improve health and well-being among people who are typically disconnected from their bodies due to trauma, chemical dependency, chronic pain, or other life stressors. She trains clinicians in MABT through the Center for Mindful Body Awareness.

The Center for Mindful Body Awareness is a non-profit aimed at providing professional trainings in Mindful Awareness in Body-oriented Therapy (MABT), an evidence-based approach to teach body/interoceptive awareness skills for client self-care and emotion regulation. Interoception is the ability to access, attend and process inner body sensory experiences. MABT strategies are particularly helpful for clients with high experiential avoidance. Professional trainings for clinicians are designed as small classes to provide a supportive and individualized learning environment. The Center also works with organizations to train staff, develop programs, and evaluate MABT services READ MORE

        Description:

Are you wanting to develop your skillfulness in how you can work with cultural differences in a way that is direct, authentic, and enlivening? Do you want to know how to expand your client’s sense of safety with you and enhance their ability to navigate the specific challenges of their lives? Have you heard about Hakomi but haven’t had the chance to explore it for yourself?

This workshop is an opportunity to explore the foundational principles of Hakomi as it relates specifically to our world of expanding complexity and global multiculturalism. Not all questions cannot be solved simply. Some questions must be lived.

Cultivating your ability to embrace both sameness and differences alike, inviting mindfulness, the mind-body connection, and creatively utilizing in-the-moment experiential exercises, offers a direct access route to deeply held patterns and beliefs. This provides the client with the powerful opportunity for something new to organically emerge with in them. This style of working creates an aliveness for therapist and client alike.

This course consists of two online learning segments:

1.5 hours of self-paced learning (brief video talk, Hakomi, demo session, articles and handouts) that you’ll complete at your own pace in the two-and-a-half weeks prior to our live Zoom class

4.5 hours of online instructor-led classroom training via-Zoom, with plenty of opportunities of experiential learning, including breakout groups where you can practice new skills in a gentle and safe environment and receive immediate guidance and feedback from your instructor.

        What you will learn:

The five basic principles of Hakomi and how they apply to psychological healing and growth

How to explore interdependency - embracing both sameness and difference

How to shift into loving presence, allowing your work with your clients to be safer and go deeper

Useful ways to increase your ability to track verbal and nonverbal behaviors

Hakomi’s unique approach to using mindfulness and the body to transform core wounding

        Who is this for?

This workshop is open and relevant to both clinicians and the general public. It also serves as prerequisite hours for the Hakomi Comprehensive Training.

Hakomi regions outside of California may require a 2-day introductory workshop (or two 1-day workshops) to satisfy the prerequisite for their Comprehensive Training.

Through the Looking Glass: Using Imaginal Resources to Heal Shame - Online Workshop - 13 CE Credits

WE ARE ALL BORN WITH POWERFUL, IMAGINAL RESOURCES. WE CAN EASILY IMAGINE PEOPLE, PLACES AND THINGS THAT HAVE NEVER EXISTED IN OUR EVERYDAY REALITY. CHILDREN LEARN TO COPE WITH LIFE LARGELY THROUGH PLAY AND FANTASY. AS WE GET OLDER, WE MAY USE THIS ABILITY LESS AND LESS, BUT IT STILL STAYS WITH US. OUR IMAGINATION NOT ONLY MAKES LIFE MORE INTERESTING, IT HELPS US SURVIVE.

When clients get stuck in shame, the most powerful way to help them get unstuck may be to activate their imagination. In the Imaginal Realm, logic and time are fluid and flexible. What actually happened can be explored and changed. What was stuck in the cognitive realm can be reexamined and shifted. Shaming situations from the past can be revisited and resolved.

In this workshop, we will utilize techniques from Drama Therapy, Focusing, Expressive Arts Therapy, Jungian active imagination processing and Hakomi. We will explore the critical voices and/or the childhood scenes that are still driving the internal shame dynamic in the client. And we will also cover how to use puppets and objects for tele-health appointments.

You will learn to help clients:

Externalize shame so that it can be worked with directly.

Work with roles, parts and shame-based introjects.

Access strength, resilience, inner resources and role repertoire.

Find a deeper understanding by working with objects you already have in your office.

Utilize imaginal techniques to give the shame back, so that it stays in the Imaginal Realm.

Once the shame is worked through in the Imaginal Realm, the client can interact with the world differently.
