Managing Psychotherapy Sessions Online: Why Embodiment Matters Now More than Ever

  • 20 Nov 2020
  • 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM
  • online

As therapists we have been spending many hours per day sitting in front of a video screen to provide treatment to clients during the COVID-19 global pandemic. This can be very difficult on our bodies and minds in ways that are not readily evident. As our brains are constantly trying to adapt to the image in front of us, our attention is being challenged to remain focused while our bodies are becoming increasingly sedentary. Awareness of these discomforts and ways to mitigate them are integral to avoiding potential long-term effects of sitting in front a screen for long periods of time.

This workshop will explain some of the science behind your personal and interpersonal difficulty while trying to connect with your clients online and provide you with some skills to manage telehealth through embodied practices. Embodiment practices provide the potential for minimizing anxiety and depression due to loss of self-awareness, while potentially mitigating the long-term deleterious effects that telehealth may have on our capacity for extended attention, empathy and compassion toward ourselves and others.

Goals:
• To define embodiment, and understand why it is integral to the psychotherapy practice online
• Learn embodied self-care practices specific to telehealth
• Set up virtual sessions with clients in a way that maintains the integrity of a psychotherapy session and retain clientele.
• Learn some experiential exercise to help you to connect and stay connected with your clients online
