Join us for our USABP On The Move event featuring facilitation from Jamie McHugh, MSMT
Our Topic for the Experiential:
Tending and Befriending our Inner Ecosystem: Somatic Expression® & the Five Somatic Technologies
Overview:
The five indigenous technologies embedded in us for physiological and psychological health are Breath, Vocalization, Contact, Movement and Stillness. Somatic Expression® is an educational method combining these five objective somatic technologies with subjective personal experimentation to tend and befriend our inner ecosystem. Drawing upon McHugh’s 45 years of research into various somatic-expressive disciplines, this user-friendly approach stands out for its simplicity and inclusivity, having introduced a wide range of people worldwide to the delicious wonder of being and becoming a body on Earth. Join us in a content-rich, relaxed space and explore collaborating with your body’s sensate wisdom!
Session:
Jamie will give a theoretical introduction to the five technologies before we transition into an experiential practice. The practice begins with lying down to maximize regeneration and bring attention inwards, and then eventually evolves into sitting upright to bring attention outwards – in this case, to your screen for an aesthetic, pre-verbal experience. We will close with responses and Q&A.
Note: Create a comfortable place on the floor (perhaps with a small pillow/cushion to rest your skull) with space around you for yielding into gravity.
Takeaways:
• Guidelines for orchestrating the five somatic technologies to create a multilayered, present moment experience
• Connections between this approach and neuroscientific research on Non-Sleep Deep Rest (NSDR), physiological sighing, mindfulness, and breathwork

Over the past 20 years, I have curated a template of simple, accessible, and effective somatic practices for tending and befriending the soma – our body of nature. These practices have arisen out of what I identified as the five somatic technologies indigenous to all bodies - breath, vocalization, contact, movement and stillness.
The investigation of these natural technologies offer us the ability to renovate, cultivate and refine our somatic foundations as a way to inhabit more fully our presence and power. Just like technologies invented by humans, these somatic technologies can extend and amplify our evolutionary capacities and capabilities as human animals seeking to be fully born.
In this learning lab, we will primarily experience, explore and discuss these five somatic technologies, and then apply them to both our personal practice and our work as somatic movement educators, therapists, coaches and guides between meetings.

USABP ON THE MOVE is an opportunity for our community to connect and experience restorative practices while getting exposure to many forms of somatic movement and mindful body-awareness programs.
The root of e-motion is “to move.” The same regions of the brain responsible for movement also carry out our cognitive processes. Our brain evolved from movement and still depends on it day to day. Join us to discover how conscious movement can bring nourishing restoration, playful community connection, and the understanding of how moving helps our thoughts, words, and actions.
Somatic tools may include, among others, breath, movement, self-directed touch, sound vibration, and conscious dialogue.
